ST. LOUIS – The University of Missouri-St. Louis baseball team hit eight home runs in its doubleheader split against Southwest Baptist on Saturday afternoon at Dodson Field in Bolivar, Mo. The Tritons dropped the first game 8-7 but came back to win the nightcap 20-4. UMSL is now 22-14, 14-9 GLVC while the Bearcats are 10-27, 7-16 GLVC.
Game 1 - SBU 8 UMSL 7
The Tritons jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first. With one out,
Braedon Stoakes tripled to right center and scored on
Barrett Rose's single down the right field line.
Kameron Laskowski brought Rose home with a two-run home run to left center.
UMSL extended its lead in the third on
Andrew Buescher's two-run home run to right center.
SBU used a two-out rally in its half of the third scoring seven runs. Dean Hagenhoff had the big blow in the inning hit a double to left center with the bases loaded to give the Bearcats a 7-5 lead.
The Tritons answered in the fourth getting a solo home run from
Logan Mantz and an RBI single from Stoakes to tie the game.
The Bearcats regained the lead in the fifth as Ayden Fetters scored on a wild pitch with the bases loaded.
UMSL had a chance to tie the game in the sixth but left two on. The Tritons had another chance in the seventh but
Jake Isaacs was caught trying to steal second to end the game.
UMSL outhit SBU 12-6 in the contest and was led by Rose with three while Stoakes, Mantz and Isaacs had two apiece.
Jacob Arndt took the loss giving up one run on two hits in his two innings of relief work to fall to 1-1 on the season.
Game 2 – UMSL 20 SBU 4
The Tritons scored in every inning but the third in the nightcap and put up multiple runs in those six innings. UMSL got a two-run home run from Rose in the first inning to take the early lead.
The Tritons extended their lead in the second scoring four runs on three hits.
Justin Simard scored on
Zach Beatty's steal of second. Stoakes made it 5-0 hitting a two-run home run to center and then Rose hit his second home run of the contest to center.
The Bearcats got two of those runs back in the third on Dominick Tellez's two-run home run to right center.
UMSL hung a five-spot in the fourth highlighted by
Logan McIntyre's two-run single to center. The Tritons added two more in the third on a solo home run from Beatty and an RBI single from Buescher.
UMSL added three more in the sixth and then put the game away in the seventh on
Cooper Blythe's grand slam to right center.
The Tritons finished with 22 hits in the contest and belted five home runs. Rose and Stoakes led the way with four hits apiece while Simard and McIntyre had three each.
Zach Haygood earned the win giving up three runs on three hits with seven strikeouts to improve to 5-1 on the season.
UMSL and SBU conclude their four-game series with a single game on Sunday afternoon starting at noon at Dodson Field.
