ST. LOUIS – The University of Missouri-St. Louis men's tennis team won eight of its nine matches in its 7-0 win over Maryville in the Great Lakes Valley Conference opener for both teams on Saturday at the UMSL Tennis Courts. The Tritons improve to 8-8, 1-0 GLVC while the Saints drop to 0-8, 0-1 GLVC.
UMSL took two of the three doubles contests to win the opening point of the match.
Tanin Ramnath and
Marcos Navas defeated Yann Frezouls and Markos Prentits 6-2 at number three doubles. Maryville won the second doubles match with its duo of Juan Suero and Lorenzo Biava defeating
Josey Mayorga and
Joshua Mackey 6-4. The Tritons won the final doubles contest as
Juan Vigil and
Raphael Kerndl beat Tom Schmitt and Jose Hernandez 6-3.
UMSL won all six singles matches in the contest. Ramnath started it off with a straight set win over Schmitt 6-1, 6-2 in the number six singles contest. Vigil followed with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Frezouls at No. 3 singles and Navas clinched the match rallying for a three-set win over Prentits 0-6, 6-4, 6-0.
Kerndl defeated Hernandez in three sets 6-2, 4-6, 6-4, Mackey rallied after dropping the opening set of his match against Suero. He won 1-6, 7-6 (8-6), 6-3 and Mayorga outlasted Biava 6-1, 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (8-6).
The Tritons are back in action next Friday as they travel to Romeoville, Ill., to take on Lewis at 2 p.m. at the Jack Oremus Tennis Complex.
