ST. LOUIS – The University of Missouri-St. Louis women's tennis team opened Great Lakes Valley Conference play with a 5-2 win over Maryville on Saturday at the UMSL Tennis Courts. The Tritons pick up their second straight win and improve to 8-7, 1-0 GLVC while the Saints drop to 4-4, 0-1 GLVC.
Maryville won two of the three doubles contest to take the opening point of the match. The Saints No. 3 doubles team of Emily Orlove and Maria Gouveia beat UMSL's
Anna Favaron and
Lauren Sweeney 6-1. The Tritons number two doubles tandem of
Hannah Tse and
Aleksandra Lopez won their match over Nazli Saka and Victoria Lisson 6-4. Maryville's number one doubles team of Bilur Gonlusen and Caitlyn Sporting defeated
Anna Domingo and
Maja Lietzau 7-6 (8-6) in a tiebreak.
UMSL dominated singles play winning five of the six singles matches. Domingo dropped the opening set of her match against Gonlusen 6-4 but rallied to win the next two 6-4, 6-1 at number one singles. Lietzau rallied for a three-set win over Saka in the second singles contest by scores of 0-6, 6-4, 6-2. Tse and Orlove split the first two sets at No. 3 singles but Tse prevailed with a 6-1 win in set three to clinch her victory.
Lopez beat Sporing in straight sets 6-0, 6-4 at number four singles and Favaron handed Lisson a 6-1, 6-1 defeat in the fifth singles match. Gouveia defeated Sweeney 6-2, 7-6 (8-6).
The Tritons head out on the road next weekend traveling to Lewis and Illinois Springfield for a pair of matches. UMSL takes on the Flyers next Friday at 2 p.m. and faces the Prairie Stars at 11 a.m. next Saturday.
