ST. LOUIS – The University of Missouri-St. Louis softball team split its doubleheader with Illinois Springfield on Saturday afternoon at the UIS Softball Complex in Springfield, Ill. The Prairie Stars (26-22, 10-10 GLVC) took game one 2-1 while the Tritons (22-24, 9-11 GLVC) won the nightcap 2-1 in eight innings.
Game 1 – UIS 2 UMSL 1
UIS used a two-out rally in the third to take the early lead. Sophie Margelot led off the inning with a walk but was erased on a 143 double play started by
Ashley Borowitz. Ella Brinkley and Isabella Wilson hit back-to-back singles and scored on Taylor Zawacki's two-run double to right center.
UMSL left four runners on bases in the fourth through sixth innings before breaking through in the seventh. The Tritons had the tying runs on base and got an RBI single from
McKenzie Lamos to pull within 2-1. Alexis Carroll struck out
Simia Spahiev swinging to end the game.
UMSL outhit the Prairie Stars 6-4 in the contest and were led by
Irene Travis with two hits while Lamos, Spahiev,
May Pasqualini and
Megan Russell had one each. Borowitz tossed a complete game giving up two runs on four hits with four strikeouts.
Game 2 – UMSL 2 UIS 8 innings
UIS jumped out to the early lead in game two with a run in the bottom of the first. With two out and the bases loaded, Zawacki scored on a wild pitch to make it 1-0.
The Tritons tied the game in the fifth. With two out and a runner on third,
Gwyn Miller struck out swinging but reached first on an error by the first baseman that allowed Russell to score the tying run.
UMSL took the lead in the eighth on Travis' RBI single to right scoring Miller.
Katie Schaake worked a perfect eighth to earn the complete game victory. She gave up the one run on three hits with seven strikeouts on 81 pitches.
The Tritons outhit the Stars 5-3 in the nightcap with Travis and Russell registering two apiece.
UMSL plays its final road games of the regular season on Sunday as it travels to Quincy, Ill., to take on the Hawks in doubleheader starting at noon at the Mart Heinen Softball Complex.
