ST. LOUIS – The University of Missouri-St. Louis men's tennis team came up short in its upset bid falling to No. 20 McKendree on Friday at the Forest Lake Tennis Club in Chesterfield, Mo. The Tritons fall to 9-10, 2-2 GLVC while the Bearcats improve to 15-3, 3-1 GLVC.
UMSL got a doubles win from the duo of
Jose Mayorga and
Joshua Mackey as they knocked off Luka Kalenic and Mathijs Aalpol 6-3 but McKendree won the other two matches to win the doubles point. Leonardo Frederico and Bendix Schroder defeated
Raphael Kerndl and
Juan Vigil 6-0 and Vishnu Prasad and Lorenzo del Biondo beat
Marcos Navas and
Tanin Ramnath 6-3.
The Bearcats won the first three singles contests to clinch the victory. Frederico, the No. 15 ranked singles player in Division II, defeated Kerndl 6-1, 6-2. Mayorga fell to Seb Holden 6-2, 7-5 and Vigil lost to Prasad 6-3, 6-0. Navas got the Tritons on the board as he rallied to beat Kalenic 3-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-5) at No. 5 singles and Mackey rallied for a three-set win over Schroder 4-6, 7-6 (7-2), 1-0 (11-9). The final singles match between Ramnath and del Biondo was tied 1-1 in the opening set when the match was called.
UMSL plays its final home match of the regular season on Saturday hosting UIndy at 12 p.m. at the UMSL Tennis Courts.
