ST. LOUIS – The University of Missouri-St. Louis women's tennis team rallied for a 5-1 victory over McKendree on Friday at Forest Lake Tennis Club in Chesterfield, Mo. The Tritons improve to 11-7, 4-0 GLVC while the Bearcats drop to 7-10, 2-2 GLVC.
With the win, UMSL clinched one of the top two seeds in the GLVC's East Division for next week's GLVC Tennis Championships at the Cooper Tennis Complex in Springfield, Mo.
The Tritons dropped the first point of the contest as McKendree won all three doubles matches.
Anna Domingo and
Maja Lietzau lost to Iva Poleksic and Sofija Djunisijevic 6-1,
Hanna Tse and
Aleksandra Lopez were beaten by Camilla Fonseca and Viola Cipriani 6-4 and
Anna Favaron and
Lauren Sweeney fell to Rhyan Cook and Maria Salomao 5-2.
UMSL rallied winning the first five singles contests to clinch the victory. Lietzau defeated Cipriani in straight sets 6-1, 6-2 and Domingo handed Fonseca a 6-3, 6-4 defeat. Tse beat Cook 6-0, 7-5 and Lopez knocked off Poleksic 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (7-2). Favaron won in straight sets over Djunisijevic 7-6, 6-1. The final singles match between
Emma Bridges and Salomao was called with Salomao leading 5-2 in the first set.
The Tritons host UIndy in their final home match of the regular season on Saturday at 12 p.m. at the UMSL Tennis Courts.
