ST. LOUIS – The University of Missouri-St. Louis men's tennis team rallied for a 4-3 win over Southwest Baptist on Saturday afternoon at the UMSL Tennis Courts. The Tritons improve to 6-8 while the Bearcats fall to 4-11.
SBU won the first two doubles matches to grab the first point of the contest.
Raphael Kerndl and
Juan Vigil fell to Ilyes Khelifi and Youssef Nabil 6-4 at number one doubles and
Jose Mayorga and
Joshua Mackey lost to Alenandro Beneyto and Pedro Pinto 6-3 to clinch the doubles point.
Tanin Ramnath and
Marcos Navas defeated Alejandro Bravo and Fabian Neff 7-6 (7-3) in the final doubles match.
UMSL tied the match at one as Vigil won the first singles point defeating Khelifi 6-3, 6-2 in the third singles match. The Bearcats took the next two matches as Nabil beat Mayorga 6-0, 6-4 and Beneyto handed Kerndl a 4-6, 7-6 (7-2), 6-4 defeat.
The Tritons rally began in the fourth singles match. Mackey dropped the first set of his match against Neff 6-4 but came back to win the next two 6-4, 6-3 to pull UMSL within 3-2. Navas won his match over Pinto 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 to even the match at 3-3.
The match came down to the final singles match between Ramnath and Bravo. Ramnath fell behind 3-0 in the opening set but rallied winning seven of the next nine games to take the frame 7-5. He dropped two of the first three games in set two before winning the next four to grab a 5-2 lead. Bravo held serve to pull within 5-3 but Ramnath was able to serve out the match to win 6-3.
UMSL returns to the courts next Friday traveling to Quincy, Ill., to take on the Hawks at 2 p.m. at Reservoir Park.
