ST. LOUIS – The University of Missouri-St. Louis women's tennis team dropped its match against Southwest Baptist 5-2 on Saturday afternoon at the UMSL Tennis Courts. The Tritons drop to 6-7 while the Bearcats improve to 4-11.
UMSL took the first doubles match as its number two team of
Aleksandra Lopez and
Hannah Tse defeated Paula Ballesteros and Giselle Garcia 6-2. SBU won the final two doubles contests by scores of 7-5 to take the doubles point.
The Tritons dropped two of the first three singles matches to fall behind 3-0.
Anna Domingo lost in straight sets to Ballesteros 5-7, 3-6. Tse won the first set of her match against Elsa Pascual 6-4 but Pascual won the next two 6-3, 6-2 to complete the comeback.
UMSL got wins at number two singles and number four singles to cut the deficit to 3-2.
Maja Lietzau defeated Ghada Dirninger 6-2, 2-6, 7-6 (7-1) to get the Tritons on the board and then Lopez beat Polina Paunova 6-1, 7-5.
The match came down to the final two singles matches. SBU clinched the win as Leticia Luiz defeated
Anna Favaron 6-3, 6-3.
Lauren Sweeney won the first set of her match against Garcia 6-4 but Garcia won the next 6-2, 1-0 (10-3).
The Tritons return to the courts next Friday traveling to Quincy, Ill., to take on the Hawks at 2 p.m. at Reservoir Park.
