Tritons Fall in Extra Innings to Quincy in Opening Game of GLVC Tournament

MARION, Ill. – The University of Missouri-St. Louis baseball team dropped its opening game to Quincy 5-4 in 10 innings at the GLVC Baseball Tournament at Mtn. Dew Park on Wednesday in Marion, Ill.

The Tritons fall to 30-21 while the Hawks improve to 26-25.

Quincy, seeded fourth, jumped out to a 2-0 lead after four innings on a sacrifice fly in the third inning that scored Adam Lewis and Jack Vitale added an RBI double to left center in the fourth that scored Cole Erickson.

UMSL, seeded fifth, cut the lead in half in the sixth on Garrett Strenger's two-out single to right that scored Bryce Kulinski. The Tritons tied the game in the seventh as Barrett Rose reached on an error by the third baseman that scored Jake Isaacs. Isaacs ran on contact on Rose's slow roller to third. The third baseman charged in but couldn't pick it up cleanly as Isaacs scored without a throw.

UMSL took the lead scoring twice in the eighth. Isaacs drove in Strenger with a double down the left field line and then Rose followed with a single to left bringing Isaacs in.

The Hawks countered with two of their own in their half of the eighth. Dupont singled to center scoring Brock Boynton and then JD Ortiz drew a walk with the bases loaded to bring home the tying run.

The game was suspended with one out in the top of the ninth for nearly 1:30. After the delay, Quincy had a chance to win the game in the bottom of the frame putting two on with one out but Brady Krile got David Broughton to hit into an inning ending double play.

The Tritons had the go-ahead run in scoring position in the 10th as Isaacs was hit by a pitch with two out and stole second but Rose struck out swinging to end the inning.

The Hawks won it in the bottom of the frame on Dupont's walk-off home run down the right field line into UMSL's bullpen for his 17th home run of the season.

The Tritons outhit Quincy 9-8 in the contest and were led by Isaacs, Rose and Strenger with two hits apiece. Zach Haygood pitched the first seven innings giving up two runs on four hits with six strikeouts. Trent Anderson pitched 1.1 giving up two runs on three hits and Krile pitched the final 0.2 giving up a run and a hit to fall to 3-2 on the season.

UMSL will take on the loser of the game between top seeded UIndy and eighth seeded Lewis on Friday afternoon at 12:30 p.m. at Mtn. Dew Park in Marion, Ill.
