Tritons Upset Second Ranked Washburn in Season Opener

TOPEKA, Kan. -- The University of Missouri-St. Louis women's soccer team upset second ranked Washburn 2-0 on Thursday evening at Yager Stadium in Topeka, Kansas. The Tritons move to 1-0 while the Ichabods drop to 0-1. It is UMSL's first win over a ranked opponent since defeating Rockhurst 2-0 on Oct. 20, 2019.

Washburn opened the game with pressure, managing two shots by the 13th minute while keeping the Tritons contained.

Jada Holloman's goal in the 21st minute was the first shot on net for the Tritons in the match. Putting her shot lower left, Holloman beat Hailey Beck for the eighth goal of her career.

The Tritons found a way to win, despite Washburn's continued pressure. It took until the 85th minute for UMSL to secure a corner. The Ichabods had five on the night.

Jaycee Cotton sealed the win with 22 seconds left in the contest. The senior's shot went top center for the 10th goal of her career and the first of the season.

UMSL was outshot 11 to four. However, three of UMSL's four shots were on net compared to only three of Washburn's 11.

Mary Kate Neal made three saves to earn her first clean sheet of the season.

The Tritons defense managed to catch Washburn offsides four times, relieving some of the pressure.

UMSL will face Northwest Missouri State on Saturday (Sept. 7) at 3:30pm at Yager Stadium. The Bearcats tied their season opener against Southern Nazarene 1-1.
