QUINCY, Ill. – In a game of runs it was Quincy that had the final one as it defeated the University of Missouri-St. Louis men's basketball team 79-76 on Monday evening at Pepsi Arena in Quincy, Ill. The Tritons drop to 8-9, 6-4GLVC while the Hawks improve to 8-8, 3-5 GLVC.
UMSL trailed by as many as 10 at 30-20 with 8:31 left in the first half before rallying with a 17-6 run to take its first lead of the game at 37-36 on a three-point basket by
Janeir Harris with 2:29 to go before the break.
The two sides traded leads over the next 1:30 before Quincy got back-to-back threes from Ethyn Brown and Jake Hamilton to take a 46-41 lead with 0:14 left in the half.
Troy Glover II hit a driving layup shortly before the intermission to cut the Hawk lead to 46-43 at halftime.
The Tritons came out strong to start the second half scoring the first seven points to grab a 50-46 lead but the Hawks countered with eight straight to regain the lead at 54-50 on a floating jumper in the paint from Hamilton at the 15:26 mark.
UMSL still trailed by four with 12:16 to go before going on a 16-4 run over the next 4:30 minutes to take its largest lead of the contest at 70-62 on a layup from
Matt Enright.
The Tritons still led by eight with less than six minutes to play but would be held to just two free throws the rest of the way as Quincy outscored them 13-2 the remainder of the way to grab a 79-76 lead.
UMSL had several chances in the final minute plus to retake the lead but missed two field goals and had a turnover. The Tritons had one more chance to tie the game but settled for a two-point shot on the final possession that was off the mark.
UMSL shot 50 percent (27-for-54) from the floor in the contest including 7-of-19 from three and shot 79 percent at the foul line. It was outrebounded in the contest 36-to-30 and outscored 11-6 in second chance points. Enright finished with a game-high 20 points and was joined in double figures by Harris and Glover with 16 points each.
Savon Wykle added 10 more.
Quincy shot 47 percent (28-for-60) from the field in the game, were 7-of-21 from three and shot 64 percent at the foul line. Hamilton was one of six Hawks to reach double figures in scoring with 13 points. Brown, Logan Robbins and Camren Kincaid had 12 points each.
The Tritons conclude their four-game road trip at Maryville this Thursday (Jan. 23) at 7:30 p.m. at Moloney Arena.
