FAYETTE, Iowa – The University of Missouri-St. Louis volleyball team extended its winning streak to five with a straight set win at Upper Iowa on Friday evening in Fayette, Iowa. The Tritons improve to 12-4, 5-0 GLVC while the Peacocks fall to 1-14, 1-4 GLVC.
Upper Iowa led by as many as four in the opening set but a late UMSL run gave it a 20-18 lead after a kill from
Maggie Johnson. The Peacocks rallied to even the stanza at 20 after a kill from Lydia Imbrogno but they wouldn't regain the lead as the Tritons closed the set on a 5-2 run to win it 25-22. Johnson had five kills in the frame while
Alayna Santel added four and
Addison Voorhees finished with three.
UMSL fell behind early in the second set but used an 8-3 run midway through the frame to grab a 17-12 lead after a kill from Santel. UIU drew to within 18-15 but wouldn't get any closer as the Tritons pulled away, scoring seven of the final nine points to win 25-17. Johnson had eight of UMSL's 16 kills in the stanza with Santel adding three more.
The final set saw eight ties and five lead changes. The Tritons trailed late in the frame at 20-16 but finished with a flourish ending the match on a 9-1 run as Johnson had three kills while
Iyannah Jackson had a kill and two blocks in the run.
UMSL hit .273 for the contest with 46 kills against 13 errors in 121 chances. Johnson recorded a career-high 19 kills while Santel added 11.
Reese Baker served three aces,
Caitlin Bishop handed out 40 assists,
Skylar Weaver had 14 digs and Jackson finished with four blocks.
The Peacocks were held to a .174 hitting percentage with 36 kills against 17 errors in 109 swings. Martha Pace had 12 kills and Kailey Porter finished with 11 kills. Grace Fruzen dished out 31 assists, Morgan Block had a match-high 17 digs and Alexis Moses finished with five blocks.
UMSL is back in action on Saturday afternoon as it travels to Kirksville, Mo., to take on Truman State at 4 p.m. at Pershing Arena.
