ST. LOUIS – The University of Missouri-St. Louis men's and women's swimming teams opened the home portion of their meet schedule sweeping William Jewell on Saturday afternoon at the UMSL Swimming Pool. The Triton women defeated the Cardinals 135-67 while the men rallied for a 104-101 victory.
On the women's side,
Libby Smith and
Justice Beard led the way with two wins apiece. Smith won the 1,000-yard freestyle in a time of 11:02.21 and the 400 individual medley at 4:44.35. Beard and
Kelsey Roth finished 1-2 in the 200 free. Beard had the winning time of 1:53.98 while Roth finished at 2:01.41. Beard came back later in the meet to win the 500 free in a time of 5:01.53.
Also picking up event wins for the Tritons were
Audrey Lantz in the 50 free at 23.22 and
Ella Lantz and
Aeri La went 1-2 in the 200 back. Lantz edged out La with a time of 2:08.49 while La touched at 2:08.93.
UMSL's 200 medley relay quartet of E. Lantz,
Stella Garrison,
Romina Itzkovich and A. Lantz claimed the top spot in a time of 1:47.92 and the women's 400 free relay squad of Beard, Itzkovich, A. Lantz and E. Lantz won posting a time of 3:36.92.
On the men's side,
Maxwell Wetteland won the 100 free in a time of 48.56 with
Aaron Wicklund finishing second in the event at 48.74 and
Joan Cortadellas Llubera had a time of 49.17.
Mikael Larsson won the 200 back at 1:54.68.
Also reaching the podium for the Tritons were
Donald Saunders,
Landon Hanesworth and
Owen Frick who finished second through fourth in the 200 free with times of 1:47.23, 1:48.23 and 1:49.56 respectively.
Lathan Parks and
Gabriel Wells went 1-2 in the 50 free with Parks edging out Wells by .07 seconds. Parks turned in a time of 21.49 seconds followed by Wells at 21.56.
Mattia Nardi finished second in the 400 IM at 4:12.10.
Dylan Bonnett was second in the 200 breast at 2:09.12 and Wicklund was third in a time of 2:12.48.
UMSL's 200 medley relay team of Wells, Nardi, Parks and
Gentry Comstock won the race at 1:35.05.
The Tritons trailed by 10 points heading into the 400 free relay but scored 15 points in the race to win by three points. UMSL's second team of Comstock, Nardi, Saunders and Larsson won the race in a time of 3:10.77 while the "A" squad of Parks, Cortadellas Llubera, Wells and
Kaleb Suitor finished second at 3:10.91.
The Tritons are back in action this Friday (Oct. 31) hosting Rockhurst at 1 p.m. at the UMSL Swimming Pool.
