Volleyball Rallies For Gritty Win At UIndy

INDIANAPOLIS – It wasn't easy but the University of Missouri-St. Louis volleyball team rallied for a gritty 3-1 win over UIndy on Sue Willey Court at the Ruth Lilly Fitness Center on Friday evening in Indianapolis. The win is the 12th straight for the Tritons and improves their record to 19-4, 9-0 GLVC while the Greyhounds fall to 16-8, 6-2 GLVC.

UMSL secured sole possession of first place in the Great Lakes Valley Conference standings thanks to Missouri S&T's 3-0 win over Rockhurst on Friday evening in Rolla, Mo.

The Tritons struggled to get their offense going in the opening set as UIndy held them to a .114 hitting percentage with just 13 kills against eight errors in 44 swings. UMSL trailed 7-2 to start the match but closed the margin to 15-13 after Alayna Santel and Iyannah Jackson blocked Paige Parlanti.

The Tritons couldn't get any closer as the Hounds scored the next three points to extend their lead back to five and took the opening set 25-19.

UMSL trailed by as many as five points in the second stanza before rallying with a 9-0 run to seize a 20-15 lead. Skylar Weaver served eight straight points in the run. UIndy rallied to within 20-19 but couldn't regain the advantage as the Tritons closed the set on 5-1 run to win 25-20 and even the match at a set apiece.

The swing set was the tightest of the match featuring 12 ties and four lead changes. The Greyhounds led 13-11 but UMSL countered with five straight points to take a 16-13 lead. The Tritons continued to hold that three-point lead and were ahead 23-20 when UIndy scored three straight to even things at 23.

UMSL got to set point after an error by Parlanti but a service error by Santel tied things at 24. The Tritons got their second chance to close out the set on a kill from Bridget Cassady and this time closed it out after a hitting error from Maddie Lynch.

UMSL led by three early in the deciding set only to see the Hounds rally and led 18-15 with the momentum on their side. The Tritons dug deep scoring five of the next eight points to draw within 21-20 on a service error. UIndy silenced the run momentarily to take a 22-20 lead but UMSL was undeterred closing the match on a 5-1 run to win it 25-23. Cassady had two big kills in the rally including the game-winner.

The Tritons hit .234 for the match with 59 kills against 20 errors in 167 attempts and were led by Santel with 16 kills while Cassady added 14, Hannah Copeland contributed 12 and hit .550 in the contest and Maggie Johnson finished with 10. Caitlin Bishop handed out 52 assists, Weaver added 19 digs and Jackson finished with five blocks.

The Greyhounds had a .241 attack percentage in the match with 62 kills against 23 errors in 162 chances. Parlanti finished with a match-high 22 kills. Carly Fonda dished out 42 assists, Macy Bruton had a match-high 25 digs while Lynch and Lauren Gips had five blocks each.

UMSL plays its final road game of the regular season on Saturday traveling to Romeoville, Ill., to face Lewis at 3 p.m. at Neil Carey Arena.
