LEBANON, Ill. -- The University of Missouri-St. Louis women's soccer team advanced to the second round of the NCAA tournament with a 3-0 win over McKendree at Leemon Field on Friday afternoon. The win is UMSL first NCAA tournament win since 2016 when it beat Rockhurst 1-0 in double overtime in the first round at Grand Valley.
The Tritons, seeded seventh, move to 13-4-2 while the Bearcats, seeded second, finish their season with a record of 13-2-6.
Maddie Clark opened the scoring in the 26
th minute. After an UMSL corner, the rebound bounced out to Clark, who took one touch before sending in a beautiful, arching shot that landed just under the crossbar to put the Tritons in front 1-0.
Ten minutes later, McKendree nearly evened the score when Maddie Mauch sent a shot in that
Rylee Griffith parried over the crossbar to preserve the Triton lead.
The key moment in the game came in the 78th minute. UMSL appeared to extend its lead scoring off a rebound but the goal was disallowed for offsides. McKendree restarted it quickly and had a three on one break in the Triton end but UMSL's defenders recovered preventing an opportunity for the equalizer.
The Tritons added a second goal in the 79thminute.
Natalie Scott ran onto a through ball, forcing McKendree's keeper to come out to try and make a save. The save ricocheted off a Bearcat defender and into the net for an own goal.
Rachel Skyberg scored the final Triton goal off a blocked shot from Clark in the 84th minute. Skyberg pounced on the rebound in the center of the 18-yard box and beat the keeper to the upper left corner to seal the victory.
UMSL outshot McKendree 26-to-13 in the contest including 15-4 in shots on goal. Griffith made four saves on her way to the shutout.
The Tritons face No. 3 seed Ashland in the second round of the NCAA Tournament on Sunday at 3 p.m. at Leemon Field. The Eagles defeated sixth seeded Drury 1-0 in the first game on Friday.
