ST. LOUIS -- The University of Missouri-St. Louis women's basketball team fell to Quincy 64-58 in a tightly contested matchup on Thursday evening on Chuck Smith Court at the Mark Twain Building. The loss drops the Tritons to 17-6, 11-5 GLVC while the Hawks win their 13th straight to improve to 19-5, 13-2 GLVC.
It was a tight first quarter with UMSL and Quincy trading baskets through the first half of the quarter. The score was tied four different times in the first five minutes of the game.
With three minutes left in the first quarter, the Tritons battled back from being down five to briefly take the lead but headed into the second quarter down two.
Mara Rieder hit two free throws and a jumper by
Alex Wolff jumper gave UMSL the one-point lead.
The game stayed close in the second quarter with the Tritons making key baskets to keep momentum with them.
Kate Rolfes started the quarter off hitting a three-point shot that gave UMSL a one-point lead.
Wolff made both her free throws and then a layup with two minutes left to cut Quincy's lead to one.
Emerson Weller hit one of her free-throws to send the Tritons into the half down two points.
UMSL came out making its shots in the second half. Rolfes started the quarter making both her free-throws before
Katie Hamill made a three-point shot to cut the Hawk lead to three points. Rieder made her two free-throws to tie the game with five minutes left in the third.
Audrey Martinez-Stewart had two steals in the third quarter to keep UMSL in front and in control of the pace of the game. Her second steal found Weller under the basket to extend the Triton lead to four points.
UMSL went into the fourth quarter with a 48-41 lead that Quincy quickly started chipped away at. The Hawks tied the game two minutes into the fourth and never looked back.
Martinez-Stewart's third steal of the game and ensuing layup with less than two minutes left brought the Tritons to within five and gave UMSL a chance with the clock winding down. The Hawks made just their free-throws to keep the lead safely out of reach down the stretch.
The Tritons shot 38 percent from the field but were 5-of-23 from the three-point arc and shot 79 percent from the free-throw line. Rieder led UMSL with 16 points, four rebounds, and two steals. Rolfes had 13 points and Wolff added 10 points.
The Hawks shot 39 percent (25-for-64) from the floor, were 3-of-14 from the three-point arc but shot 52 percent (11-for-21) from the free-throw line. Nicole Dermott led Quincy with 17 points, six rebounds, and one steal. Acheampomaa Danso and Karsyn Stratton each had 10 points for the Hawks.
The Tritons wrap up their homestand on Saturday hosting Upper Iowa at 1 p.m. at the Mark Twain Building. The Peacocks edged Maryville 54-52 on Thursday evening.
