INDIANAPOLIS – The University of Missouri-St. Louis men's basketball team held off a second half rally to defeat UIndy 71-70 on Saturday afternoon at Nicoson Hall in Indianapolis. The Tritons move to 12-10, 10-5 GLVC while the Greyhounds drop to 13-10, 7-8 GLVC.
UMSL scored the first eight points of the contest and never trailed in the game although the Hounds did tie the score on three separate occasions in the first 20 minutes. The Tritons shot 67 percent (18-for-27) from the field and from three (8-of-12) in the frame as they went into the locker room with a 46-40 lead at the break.
Savon Wykle and
Matt Enright combined for over half of UMSL's points in the first stanza.
The Tritons extended their lead to seven more than three minutes into the second half after two free throws from
Janeir Harris but UIndy wouldn't quit pulling within one on five different occasions in the stanza.
Each time UMSL was able to prevent the Greyhounds from taking the lead.
The Tritons led by six with 1:32 to play after a three-pointer from
Emanuel Prospere II but UIndy got a bucket from Brody Whitaker and a three from DaShawn Jackson in the span of 0:49 to pull within 71-70.
After a timeout, the Tritons turned the ball over and the Hounds had a chance for the final shot. Jackson missed a layup with 0:09 left but Whitaker got the rebound. After a timeout, UIndy had one last chance but Jackson's shot at the buzzer was off the mark and Enright grabbed the rebound to secure the victory.
UMSL finished the game shooting 28-for-49 (57 percent) from the floor including 10-of-20 from three and 71 percent at the foul line. It outscored the Greyhounds in the paint 30-to-16. Prospere and Wykle led four Tritons in double figures with 16 points apiece. They were joined by Enright with 15 while
Troy Glover II added 11 points and 11 rebounds.
UIndy shot 40 percent (24-for-60) from the field in the game, was 10-of-28 from three and shot 71 percent at the foul line. It outrebounded UMSL 31-to-30. DaShawn Jackson had 16 points off the bench to lead the Hounds while Zach Szul had 14, Grant Disken added 13 and Whitaker finished with 10.
