Tritons Cage Lions on Final Day of Alvy Early Memorial Classic

ST. LOUIS – The University of Missouri-St. Louis softball team was successful in all three phases of the game getting timely hitting, solid pitching and defense as it shut out Missouri Southern 7-0 at Memorial Park on Sunday afternoon in Bentonville, Ark. The Tritons first game of the day against Emporia State was canceled due to the cold morning temperatures in the region.

UMSL (4-5) struck first just two batters into the contest. Jamie Widule led off the game with a double down the left field line and advanced to third as the throw back in was off target. She scored on Courtney Settles single up the middle.

The Tritons added to its lead in the fourth as Rylie Buchanan led off the inning with a home run to left for her second of the season. UMSL got another run in the fifth as Settles doubled to left center scoring Widule who led off the inning with an infield single.

The Lions (6-5) best chance to score came in the fourth as they loaded the bases after the first two were retired but Ashley Borowitz struck out pinch hitter Emma Mason looking to end the inning.

The Tritons put the game away in the seventh scoring four runs on three hits and an error. Simia Spahiev and May Pasqualini had run scoring singles in the inning and Pasqualini and Gwyn Miller pulled off a double steal for the final run of the frame.

UMSL outhit MSSU 12-6 in the contest and were led by Settles with three hits and two RBI while Widule, Buchanan, Miller and Pasqualini had two hits apiece. Borowitz picked up her second complete game shutout of the weekend allowing the six hits and struck out three while allowing one walk to move to 3-1 on the season.

The Tritons host Northwest Missouri State in their home opener next Sunday (Feb. 16) starting at 12 p.m. at the UMSL Softball Field.
