ROLLA, Mo. – The University of Missouri-St. Louis softball team swept its doubleheader at Missouri S&T winning game one 9-4 and game two 7-3 at the S&T Softball Field on Sunday afternoon. The Tritons improve to 10-11, 3-5 GLVC while the Miners drop to 5-20, 2-4 GLVC.
Game 1 – UMSL 9 S&T 4
UMSL jumped out to the early lead putting up a four spot in the first inning.
Ashley Borowitz had the big hit in the inning with a two-run single up the middle scoring
Gwyn Miller and
Rylie Buchanan.
S&T cut the lead in half in the home half of the first on Sydney Anderson's two-run home run to left center.
The Tritons regained their four-run lead thanks to a two-out rally in the second. Buchanan reached on an error by the first baseman allowing G. Miller to score.
Phoebe Miller followed with a single to right scoring Buchanan.
The Miners got a solo home run from Trista Grobe in the fourth and an RBI triple from Kayle LaChappell in the fifth to cut UMSL's lead to 6-4.
The Tritons tacked on three runs in the seventh for some insurance. Borowitz singled to center driving in
Simia Spahiev and G. Miller hit a two-run single plating Borowitz and
May Pasqualini.
UMSL had 10 hits in the contest and were led by G. Miller, Borowitz and
Jamie Widule with two apiece. Borowitz picked up the win to improve to 5-4 on the season. She gave up four runs on six hits with a season-high 11 strikeouts.
Game 2 – UMSL 7 S&T 3
S&T jumped out to the early lead with two runs in the first but the Tritons tied the game in the third on a two-run home run to right center from G. Miller.
The Miners retook the lead in their half of the third on an RBI single from Grobe.
UMSL took the lead in the fourth scoring five runs on four hits and an error. Widule was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to tie the game and G. Miller hit a three-run triple into the left field corner to give the Tritons the lead. UMSL's final run of the inning came on an RBI single from
Kaytie Kossina.
UMSL had six hits in the nightcap and were led by G. Miller and Kossina with two each.
Lexi Sherrick earned the win in the circle to improve to 2-1 on the season. She gave up three runs on six hits with eight strikeouts in five innings pitched.
The Tritons return to the diamond next Saturday (March 22) taking on crosstown rival Maryville in a doubleheader at the Maryville Softball Field starting at noon.
