ST. LOUIS – The University of Missouri-St. Louis men's tennis team defeated Northwest Missouri State, a perennial power out of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association, 4-3 on Sunday. The Tritons improve to 3-2 while the Bearcats drop to 3-2.
UMSL got a doubles victory from its number one team of
Tanin Ramnath and
Daniel Berdecio as they edged Hugo Alvarez Gonzalez and Luc Mascitti 7-6 but NWMSU won the final two doubles matches to win the opening point of the match.
The Tritons dropped the first two singles matches as
Alejandro Ley fell to Dominik Wijntes 2-6, 4-6 at number one singles and Ramnath lost to Mascitti 6-2, 2-6, 0-1.
UMSL trailed in the match 3-0 but won the final four singles contests to pull out the victory. The Tritons got wins from
Percy Siercke at number three singles as he beat Antonin Leborne 7-6, 3-6, 1-0, Berdecio rallied to beat Vini Rodrigues 2-6, 6-4, 1-0 in the number four singles match and
Henry Roberts defeated Niccolo Chiriatti in straight sets 6-1, 6-1 to even the match at three.
It came down to the final singles match between Alvarez Gonzalez and
Joan Garros. Garros dropped the first set 6-4 but rallied to win the last win 7-5 and 1-0 in a thrilling 11-9 tiebreak.
UMSL is back in action next Sunday (March 9) hosting Purdue Northwest at 10 a.m. at the UMSL Tennis Courts.
