ST. LOUIS – The University of Missouri-St. Louis baseball team stepped out of a conference play on Tuesday to take on Missouri Western and fell 6-2 at the UMSL Baseball Field on Tuesday afternoon. The Tritons fall to 17-11 while the Griffons improve to 6-20.
UMSL struck first with a run in the home half of the second.
Noah Tomaras led off the inning with a walk and went to third on
Cooper Blythe's single to right. Tomaras scored on
Brady Robertson's RBI single to left center for the first run of the contest.
The Tritons had runners at second and third with one out but couldn't add on as Blythe was thrown out at the plate on a fielder's choice and
Cade Grevengoed struck out looking with the bases loaded to end the inning.
MWSU took the lead with two runs in the third. With one out, Quinton Robertson was hit by a pitch and stole second. Robertson scored on Jackson Bryant's two-out single to center to tie the game. Easton Mains scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch to make it 2-1.
UMSL tied the game in the fourth on
LJ Randle's RBI single through the right side of the infield that Robertson.
The Griffons reclaimed the lead in the sixth. Tyson Gerdes and Diego Rodriguez led off the inning with back-to-back singles. After a double play off the bat of pinch hitter Carson Shear, Kaden Doan brought home Gerdes with a single to center to make it 3-2. Later in the inning, Doan scored on Bryant's double down the left field line.
The Tritons got their first two men on in the home half of the sixth but Carson Rosen came on out of the bullpen retiring three of the next four hitters to keep UMSL off the scoreboard and preserve the 4-2 lead.
MWSU tacked on insurance runs in the seventh and eighth innings for the final margin.
The Tritons were held to six hits in the contest and were led by Blythe, Robertson, Randle,
Braedon Stoakes,
Andrew Buescher and
Justin Simard with one apiece.
Garrett Brunstetter took the loss giving up two runs on four hits in two innings pitched with a pair of strikeouts but walked two to fall to 0-3.
UMSL begins a nine-game road swing on Friday with a single game at Lewis starting at 2 p.m. at Brennan Field in Romeoville, Ill.
