ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – The University of Missouri-St. Louis baseball team dropped both ends of its doubleheader against Lewis 10-4 and 10-2 on Friday afternoon at Brennan Field in Romeoville, Ill. The Tritons drop to 17-13, 7-7 GLVC while the Flyers improve to 17-6, 12-2 GLVC.
Game 1 – Lewis 10 UMSL 4
UMSL jumped out to the early lead in the opener as
Braedon Stoakes hit a one out double to left and scored on
Barrett Rose's single to right.
Lewis tied the game in the home half of the first. Chris McDevitt led off with a single to right and scored on Mikey Kocen's double to center. The Flyers hit three home runs in the second inning as Cole Nelson and Tyler Phommachanhom hit back-to-back home runs and Kocen added a two-run blast.
The Tritons got a run back in the fourth on
Andrew Buescher's solo home run but Lewis answered in the home half of the fourth on McDevitt's solo home run. The Flyers extended the lead to 7-2 in in the sixth on Jason Krol's RBI single to left.
Cooper Blythe made it 7-4 hitting a two-run home run in the eighth but Lewis added three in its half of the eighth for the final margin.
UMSL was held to six hits I the contest with Blythe and Stoakes accounting for four of them.
Zach Haygood took the loss giving up six runs on 10 hits with two strikeouts in five innings pitched to fall to 2-1 on the season.
Game 2 – Lewis 10, UMSL 2
In the second game of the twinbill, the Flyers got a run in the first on Mikey Kocen's RBI single to right and added three more in the third. Kocen scored on a balk to make it 2-0 and then Cain Headrick hit a two-run home run to make it 4-0.
Buescher got the Tritons on the board in the nightcap hitting a solo home run in the fourth for his second of the day but Lewis countered as Nelson hit his second home run of the afternoon in the bottom of the frame.
The Flyers put the game away scoring five runs in the sixth highlighted by Jackson Hunley's two-run double to center.
UMSL's final run came in the seventh as
Owen Polly scored on a wild pitch with the bases loaded.
The Tritons had five hits in game two with Buescher, Polly,
Logan McIntyre,
Garrett Strenger and
Dane Stevenson recording one each.
Bryce Stenzel took the loss in the second game giving up four runs on seven hits in three innings pitched to fall to 0-1 on the season.
UMSL and Lewis conclude their four-game series on Saturday with another doubleheader starting at noon at Brennan Field.
