UMSL Softball Sweeps Peacocks

Hannah Tomlianovich was 7-9 on the day with eight RBI.

ST. LOUIS -- The University of Missouri-St. Louis softball team swept Upper Iowa by scores of 10-8 in nine innings and 8-0 in five innings on Sunday at the UMSL Softball Field. The Tritons improve to 16-21, 9-13 GLVC while the Peacocks fall to 12-27, 8-16 GLVC.

GAME 1 - UMSL 10 Upper Iowa 8 (9 innings)
UMSL and Upper Iowa traded runs in an explosion of offense, but the Tritons came out on top thanks to a ninth inning two-out, two-run walk off home run by Simia Spahiev. For Spahiev it was her third home run of the weekend and second walk-off in as many days. Hannah Tomlianovich started the rally with a triple to right that just missed leaving the yard.

Jamie Widule started the day off for the Tritons with an RBI double to left center, bringing home Hannah Tomlianovich.

The Peacocks had a three run second inning. They scored with an RBI single to center field from Serah Shafer and then Taylor Sedam grounded out on a ball deflected by the pitcher to the shortstop who threw her out at first while a run scored. Tristan Doster hit a single to left scoring Elliott Pomeroy with the final run of the frame.

The Tritons answered in the third when Megan Russell singled to third base scoring Widule and a throwing error on the play allowed Gwyn Miller to score the tying run. UMSL took the lead in the fourth as May Pasqualini scored on an error by Kylie Doty in left on Tomlianovich's single.

The Peacocks tied the game in the fifth and took the lead with four in the sixth.

The Tritons responded with two runs in the bottom of the sixth to cut the lead in half. Tomlianovich drove in the first run the inning with a sacrifice fly to center brought home Julia Sandles. Widule followed with a single to left to bring home Pasqualini.

Down to their final three outs, UMSL loaded the bases with no one out. Back-to-back strikeouts brought Tomlianovich to the plate and she delivered lining a 2-2 pitch over the second baseman's head bringing home Kaytie Kossina and Russell to tie the game.

The Tritons had a season-high 18 hits in the contest and were led by Tomlianovich with four while Widule and Russell had three each. Ashley Borowitz pitched two scoreless innings in relief to even her record at 8-8.

Game 2 – UMSL 8 Upper Iowa (5 innings)
Another explosion of offense saw UMSL defeat the Peacocks in five innings in the second game of the double header.

The Tritons opened the scoring in the second as Tomlianovich lined a single down the left field line to score Russell with the first run of the game.

Kossina added another run with a single to right field in the third inning. Then, with the bases loaded, Pasqualini walked with the bases loaded to force in a run. Tomlianovich cleared the bases with a double to left center to bust it open.

UMSL earned the run rule victory in the fifth as Tomlianovich hit a hard-hit ball to second that ate up Addyson Alber at second. Phoebe Miller scored from third and Sandles scored from second ahead of the throw for the final run of the game.

Tomlianovich was the hitting star in game two finishing with three of the Tritons 10 hits and added five RBI. G. Miller added two hits while Pasqualini, Widule, Kossina, P. Miller and Sandles had one each. Borowitz tossed a five-inning shutout giving up just four hits while striking out two to improve to 9-8.

The Tritons continue their nine-game homestand hosting Northwest Missouri State on Thursday (April 17) at 1:30 p.m. at the UMSL Softball Field.
