ST. LOUIS – The University of Missouri-St. Louis women's tennis came up short in its match against McKendree falling 4-3 at the St. Clair Tennis Club on Saturday afternoon in O'Fallon, Ill. The Tritons drop to 9-6, 2-2 GLVC while the Bearcats move to 5-15, 2-1 GLVC.
UMSL won two of the three doubles contests to win the opening point of the dual. It's number one team of
Hannah Tse and
Aleksandra Lopez defeated Iva Poleksic and Lena Greefs 6-3. McKendree tied it as it's number three team of Keira Greefs and Ivana Milkova beat
Giuliana Cunza and
Emma Bridges 6-2. The Tritons won the second doubles match as the tandem of
Anna Favaron and
Lauren Sweeney handed Sofija Djunisijevic and Joelle Tabernal a 6-3 defeat.
UMSL extended its lead as Tse beat L. Greefs in straight sets 6-3, 6-3 at number one singles while Lopez defeated Poleksic 6-3, 6-3 at number two singles. The Bearcats rally started at number six singles as Tabernal won when Bridges retired after the first set. Djunisijevic beat Favaron 6-3, 6-3 to bring McKendree within 3-2.
Sweeney rallied from 3-0 deficit to win the opening set of her match against K. Greefs 7-5 but Greefs won the final two 6-2, 6-3 to even the match at 3-3. Cunza dropped the opening set of her match with Milkova 6-4 and was down 5-2 in the second set but rallied to win in a tiebreak 7-6 (7-5) to force the winner take all third set. Milkova won the final set 6-3 to clinch the match for McKendree.
The Tritons wrap up the regular season next Saturday against crosstown rival Maryville at 11 a.m.
