ST. LOUIS – The University of Missouri-St. Louis softball team wrapped up the home portion of its 2025 scheduled dropping both ends of its doubleheader to Missouri Western 3-0 and 5-3 on Tuesday afternoon at the UMSL Softball Field. The Tritons drop to 17-24 while the Griffons improve to 30-18.
Game 1 – MWSU 3 UMSL 0
The opening game of the twinbill was a pitcher's duel for the first three innings as
Ashley Borowitz sat down the first nine hitters she faced while Sydney Rader retired nine of the first 10 hitters she faced.
MWSU broke through in the fourth taking advantage of two UMSL errors to take a 2-0 lead. Taylor Jones reached on an error to start the inning and went to third on Kalee Higdon's double to right center. With one out, Mackenzie Devine laid down a squeeze bunt to
Hannah Tomlianovich who was charging on the play. Tomlianovich flipped it to
Phoebe Miller but Jones scored and Tomlianovich's throw got past Miller allowing Higdon to score from second.
The Griffons added to their lead in the fifth as Jones reached on an infield single to short scoring Sienna Reed.
Rader held the Triton bats in check allowing only three hits with two walks and nine strikeouts to earn her 19th win of the season.
Tomlianovich,
Kaytie Kossina and
Megan Russell had one hit each in the contest. Borowitz took the loss giving up three unearned runs in four innings pitched with five strikeouts to fall to 10-9 on the season.
Game 2 – MWSU 5 UMSL 3
UMSL fell behind in the nightcap three batters into the game. Jones reached on a dropped pop up on a miscommunication from Pasqualini and
Simia Spahiev and advanced to second. Higdon sacrificed her to third and Jones scored on Sydney Young's groundout to short.
The Griffons extended the lead in the second on Reed's two-run home run to left center to make it 3-0.
The Tritons got a run back in the bottom of the second on
Lexi Sherrick's RBI single down the left field line scoring Kossina.
MWSU got two more in the fourth on a two-run double off the fence in center scoring Ashlyn Finarty and Morgan Bryd to make it 5-1. Jones tried to score on the play as well but was thrown out at the plate to end the inning.
UMSL got those two runs back in its half of the fourth. Kossina and
Rylie Buchanan led off the inning with back-to-back singles and an error by Jones in center allowed Kossina to score and Buchanan ended up third. Buchanan scored on a wild pitch to make it 5-3.
The Tritons caught a break in the seventh as Russell reached on a throwing error by Higdon to start the frame but was erased when Sherrick grounded into a 463 double play and then Pasqualini hit it hard but lined out to Jones in center to end the game.
UMSL had six hits in the nightcap with Tomlianovich, Spahiev, Kossina, Buchanan, Russell and Sherrick recording one apiece.
Ashley Ware took the loss giving up three runs, two earned, on five hits in three innings pitched with a strikeout.
The Tritons wrap up the regular season this weekend starting with a doubleheader at William Jewell starting at noon at Cardinal Field in Liberty, Mo.
