ST. LOUIS – The University of Missouri-St. Louis men's tennis team wrapped up the regular season with a 5-2 win over crosstown rival Maryville at the Dwight Davis Tennis Center at Forest Park on Saturday. The Tritons improve to 11-7, 4-1 GLVC while the Saints finish the season with a record of 5-12, 1-4 GLVC.
UMSL won the first doubles match as its number one duo of
Tanin Ramnath and
Percy Siercke defeated Lorenzo Biava and Markos Prentits 6-4 but Maryville evened doubles play with a win at number three doubles. The Tritons won the doubles point as the tandem of
Alejandro Ley and
Daniel Berdecio won in a tiebreak 7-6 (9-7) over Jose Hernandez and Michael Delaloye to clinch the doubles point.
The Saints won the first two singles matches to take a 2-1 lead in the match but UMSL won the final four to seal the victory. Ley dropped the opening set of his match with Hernandez 6-7 (3-7) but won the final two 6-4, 6-4 to even the match at two apiece. Berdecio gave the Tritons a 3-2 lead with his 7-5, 6-2 win against Juan Suero.
Joan Garros clinched the victory for UMSL beating Prentits 6-4, 6-3 and
Henry Roberts held off a rally from Jack Quilty to win 6-0, 2-6, 6-3 in the number five singles contest.
The Tritons will be the number two seed from the East Division and will take on Quincy, third seed from West Division, in the first round of the GLVC Men's Tennis Tournament in Springfield, Ill., on Friday (May 2).
