ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – The University of Missouri-St. Louis baseball team rallied for a 6-5 victory over Missouri Western on Tuesday afternoon at the Griffon Baseball Field in St. Joseph, Mo. The win is the fourth straight for the Tritons and they improve to 21-16 while the Griffons fall to 8-24.
MWSU jumped out to a quick lead with three runs in the first inning highlighted by a two-run triple from Easton Mains. The Griffons added another run in the fourth on an RBI single from Blake Anderson scoring Easton O'Keefe.
UMSL got on the board in the sixth scoring two runs on two hits and a couple of errors.
Braedon Stoakes scored the first run on a fielding error by the third baseman and
Owen Polly followed with a pinch-hit single up the middle scoring
Mitch Bonczkowski.
Andrew Buescher tried to score from second on the play but was thrown out at the plate.
MWSU tacked on an insurance run in the seventh as O'Keefe singled to left bring home Cameron Dean.
The Tritons got an RBI single from
Cade Grevengoed and a two-run double from Polly to tie the game at five in the eighth. UMSL had a chance to take the lead but back-to-back groundouts ended the inning.
The Tritons took the lead in the ninth. With one out, Stoakes walked, stole second, advanced to third on a throwing error by the pitcher and scored on Bonczkowski's ground-rule double to left center.
Will Johnson struck out two of the three hitters he faced in the home half of the ninth to pick up his second save of the season.
Dustin Hagens worked around a pair of two out walks in the eighth to earn his second win of the season.
UMSL had eight hits in the contest with Stoakes, Grevengoed and Polly recording two apiece while Bonczkowski and Buescher had one each.
The Tritons begin an eight-game homestand on Friday hosting Rockhurst in the first of a four-game series at 2 p.m. at the UMSL Baseball Field.
