Tritons Rally Late To Defeat Top Seeded Flyers In Extra Innings

MARION, Ill. – The University of Missouri-St. Louis baseball team played into Thursday morning but thanks to a late rally upset No. 24 Lewis 8-7 in 10 innings on Wednesday evening at Mtn Dew Park in Marion, Ill. The Tritons improve to 28-22 while the Flyers fall to 36-15.

Lewis, seeded first, jumped out to a 5-0 lead after five innings of play. Will Bruno and Jackson Hunley each drove in a run in the third, Jason Krol brought home a pair with a two-run single in the fourth and Mikey Kocen hit a sacrifice fly in the fifth.

UMSL, seeded eighth, got on the board in the sixth on a double to left center off the bat of Mitch Bonckowski scoring Braedon Stoakes to break up the shutout.

The Flyers got that run back in their half of the sixth on an RBI triple from Cain Headrick off the fence in left. Will Johnson came out of the pen and prevented Headrick from scoring to extend the lead.

The Triton rally started in the eighth as Stoakes chopped a double down the third base line over the head of Cole Nelson. Barrett Rose brought home Stoakes with a single up the middle. Bonczkowski followed with a single on a hit-and-run play through the right side of the infield sending Rose to third with no one out. After a foul out down the left field, Cade Grevengoed hit a single to right scoring Rose.

Grevengoed stole second and he and Bonczkowski scored on Cooper Blythe's two run single to center to cut the deficit to 6-5.

Lewis saw its first two men reach in the home half of the eighth but Cody Brooks got Nelson to pop into a 1-4 double play on a bunt attempt and then he retired Tyler Phommachanhom on a comebacker for the final out of the frame.

UMSL took the lead in the ninth as Owen Polly and Stoakes reached on back-to-back infield singles. Rose laid down a sacrifice bunt along the third base line to advance the runners for Bonczkowski. Bonczkowski lined an 0-1 pitch into the left center gap for a double scoring Polly and Stoakes.

The Flyers loaded the bases with two walks and a bunt single against Dustin Hagens in the bottom of the frame. Hagens struck out Krol for the first out but Cain Headrick hit a deep fly ball to left scoring Chris McDevitt with the tying run. With the winning run 90 feet away, Hagens struck out Bruno to send the game to extra innings.

The Tritons retook the lead in the 10th. With one out, Noah Tomaras singled to center and with Blythe batting Tomaras took off on the pitch as Blythe hit into 63 ground out but UMSL stayed out of the double play. With two away, Logan McIntyre delivered a pinch-hit double down the right field line to bring home Tomaras.

Lewis got the tying run on in its half of the 10th but Hagens struck out the next three hitters to seal the victory.

The Tritons outhit the Flyers 13-12 in the contest and were led by Stoakes with four hits while Bonczkowski added three and drove in three runs. Hagens got the final six outs to pick up his third win of the season.

UMSL takes on UIndy, seeded fifth, in a winner's bracket game on Thursday evening at 7:30 p.m. at Mtn Dew Park. The Greyhounds defeated fourth seeded Drury 9-8 in 11 innings in the first game of the day on Wednesday.
