ST. LOUIS -- The University of Missouri-St. Louis women's soccer team defeated Washburn 3-0 for its first win of the season on Saturday afternoon at Don Dallas Field. The victory also marked the first win for new head coach
Stephen Cavallo in his UMSL tenure.
The Tritons (1-1) struck in the 19th minute with
Josie Maddox beating her defender on the left side to give herself the space to send a cross into the box.
Kennedi Hooks was in the perfect position to get her head on the ball and send it into the goal to give UMSL a 1-0 lead. The goal is Hooks second in her career.
In the 40th minute,
Gwen Maggard stepped up to take a free-kick from about 25-yards out. She placed the ball perfectly, sending it off the crossbar and down into the goal to double the Triton lead. The free-kick goal is the second goal of her career.
Four minutes later, UMSL scored off another set piece, this time a corner. Maggard swung the ball in towards the six-yard box and
Taylor Martin beat her defender to the spot, heading the ball past Washburn's goalkeeper to make it 3-0 Tritons.
