ST. LOUIS -- The University of Missouri-St. Louis women's basketball team rode a second quarter scoring run to a 67-55 win over Missouri S&T on Thursday evening at the Mark Twain Building. The Tritons improve to 13-2, 9-0 GLVC while the Miners drop to 7-6, 3-4 GLVC.
It took UMSL three minutes to get on the board in the first quarter.
Jayden Kuper made both her free throws to start the Tritons off. Thirty seconds later
Morgan Ramthun added a layup to tie the score at 4-4.
A 10-4 run by UMSL sent the Tritons into second quarter with a two-point lead after S&T hit a layup with 0:20 to play in the frame.
Jaeda Wilson hit back to back three-pointers in the middle of the second quarter to extend UMSL's lead to seven. The Tritons got another four points with Kuper making two free-throws and Wilson adding a layup in
the final three minutes of the quarter and held a 26-17 lead at halftime.
UMSL started the third quarter with a nine-point lead. The Miners scored five quick points but
Lexi Hanna hit a three-pointer to disrupt momentum and get the Tritons on the board in the second half.
Defensive rebounding by UMSL kept S&T off the board. Three offensive rebounds—two by
Mara Rieder and one by Ramthun—helped to extend UMSL possessions down the stretch.
A Rieder jump shot gave the Tritons a 13-point lead to start the fourth quarter. Free-throw shooting helped preserve UMSL's lead as the Tritons scored 11 of their 23 points in the final quarter at the charity stripe.
UMSL shot 36 percent (22-for-61) from the field including 4of-10 from three and shot 95 percent (19-for-20) from the free-throw line. Kuper led the Tritons with 16 points, four rebounds, and one steal. Wilson had a career-high 14 points along with eight rebounds, and two assists while Rieder recorded her eighth double-double of the season with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Ramthun added 13 points.
The Miners shot 22-for-51 (43 percent) from the floor but were 1-of-6 from beyond the arc and shot 67 percent at the foul line. Norah Gum led S&T with 16 points, four rebounds, and two blocks.
The Tritons continue their three-game homestand this Saturday (Jan. 17) against Lincoln at 1 p.m. on Chuck Smith Court at the Mark Twain Building.
