St. Louis — The University of Missouri-St. Louis men's soccer team defeated Truman State 2-1 on Saturday evening at Don Dallas Field. The Tritons improve to 4-4-2, 3-3-2 GLVC, while the Bulldogs are 4-4-3, 3-3-3 GLVC.
Brady Freeman started the scoring in spectacular fashion, scoring a bicycle kick goal in the 73
rd minute.
Mason Niedbalski found space on the wing and sent in a cross that a Truman defender headed up. A waiting Freeman timed his kick perfectly for his team leading sixth goal of the season.
Ten minutes later, Freeman scored again. Owen Robben hit the free kick directly into Freeman's back, and the ball ricocheted into the goal to give UMSL a two-goal cushion and added to Freeman's team lead with seven goals scored.
The Bulldogs cut the deficit in half when
Colson Below was called for a penalty in the 87
th minute. Jacob Panagos stepped up and buried his shot in the lower left netting with three-plus minutes left to play.
Will Winkler made six saves in the contest, but the crucial one came in the 69
th minute when Roman Scognamillo was in on goal alone. Winkler parried the shot to keep the game scoreless.
Freeman led the Tritons with four shots, all on goal.
Benjamin Ocampo had three while
Mario Garcia and
Isaac Valverde each had one on target apiece.
UMSL travels to Jefferson City on Wednesday (Oct. 7) to take on Lincoln at 7:30 p.m. at Capital City High School.
