ST. LOUIS – The University of Missouri-St. Louis softball dropped both games of its doubleheader against No. 7 Missouri Southern 11-3 in five innings and 10-2 in six innings on Friday afternoon at Joplin High School in Joplin, Mo. The Tritons fall to 4-7 while the Lions improve to 17-1.
Game 1 MSSU 11, UMSL 3 5 innings
UMSL struck first in the opener with a run in its first at-bat.
May Pasqualini led off the game with a double, went to third on a groundout and scored
Gracie Philpot's groundout to short.
MSSU answered with a three-run home run from Emily Perry in the home half of the first then added four more in the second highlighted by Katie Gray's three-run home run.
The Tritons got a run back in the fourth as Philpot scored when
Kaytie Kossina reached first on an error by the shortstop.
The Lions added four more in the fourth as Perry hit her second three-run home run of the contest to make it 11-2.
UMSL's final run came in the fifth on RBI single from Philpot scoring Pasqualini.
The Tritons were held to four hits in the game with Pasqualini and Philpot accounting for all four of them.
Ashley Borowitz dropped to 2-3 as she gave up seven runs, three earned, on four hits in two innings pitched.
Game 2 – MSSU 10, UMSL 2 6 innings
UMSL took the early lead again in the nightcap as Pasqualini led off the game with a single and scored on Philpot's double.
MSSU tied it in the first as Bailey Dillon stole home on the back end of a double steal. The Lions took the lead in the second on Dillon's two-run home run.
The Tritons got one of those runs back in the fourth on
Kiley Sullivan's RBI triple that scored Pasqualini.
MSSU broke it open with three more in the fourth and walked it off with four runs in the sixth for the run-rule win.
UMSL had five hits in the second game with Pasqualini, Sullivan, Philpot,
Jamie Widule and
Keira Hayton recording one apiece.
Sasha Buckberger took the loss giving up six runs on three hits in three innings pitched to fall to 0-1.
The Tritons wrap up their weekend road trip with a doubleheader at Pittsburg State on Saturday afternoon starting at 1 p.m. at the Pittsburg State Softball Field.
