KANSAS CITY – The University of Missouri-St. Louis softball team swept its Saturday doubleheader against Rockhurst 3-2 and 10-2 at Loyola Softball Park in Kansas City. The Tritons improve to 10-14, 3-1 GLVC while the Hawks fall to 13-10, 1-3 GLVC.
GAME ONE: UMSL 3, ROCKHURST 2
UMSL got on the board first with a
Phoebe Miller single up the middle to bring home
Kaytie Kossina from second base in the first inning. Kossina had reached on a walk and advanced to second on a fielder's choice.
Rockhurst answered in the bottom of the first with a single to right field that advanced the runner on second to make it 1-1.
The Tritons scored twice in the third inning with
Kiley Sullivan scoring on a wild pitch after doubling down the right field line and advancing to third on a passed ball. Miller homered to left field in the next at bat.
The Hawks once again answered in the bottom half of the inning, scoring a run thanks to a double by Emily Berry that scored the runner from first base to cut UMSL's lead to 3-2.
Ashley Ware picked up the win in four innings pitched with two strikeouts to improve to 3-1.
Ashley Borowitz picked up her first save of the season with three innings pitched and one strikeout.
GAME TWO: UMSL 10, ROCKHURST 2
Rockhurst opened the scoring in the first inning with a solo home run to left field.
The Tritons answered with a three-run homer in the second inning as
Kenzie Stoltz brought home
Keira Hayton and Kossina with her blast to left for her first collegiate home run.
Kossina hit a sacrifice fly in the third inning to bring home Sullivan putting UMSL in front 4-1.
It was a three-run fifth inning for the Tritons, starting with a Sullivan double to left center that brought home
Jamie Widule. Two batters later,
Kodie VanEycke singled up the middle, scoring one run before a throwing error brought home a second.
The Hawks brought a run back with an RBI single to make it 7-2 heading into the sixth.
A Kossina single to left field in the sixth brought home
May Pasqualini from third and Widule from second to put the Tritons up 9-2.
UMSL added another in the seventh inning after loading the bases. Pasqualini put the ball into play, forcing a fielder's choice that allowed
Gracie Philpot to score from third.
Stoltz picked up the win in five innings pitched with four strikeouts, improving to 2-3 on the season.
The Tritons host Missouri S&T in their official home opener next Saturday (March 21) at the UMSL Softball Field. The doubleheader is scheduled to start at noon.
