INDIANAPOLIS – The University of Missouri-St. Louis baseball team won its series finale against the University of Indianapolis 10-7 in 10 innings on Sunday afternoon at Bill Bright Field at Greyhound Park in Indianapolis. The Tritons took out three out of four in the series and improved to 23-18, 17-7 GLVC while the Greyhounds drop to 24-18, 15-9 GLVC.
UMSL got on the board first thanks to a two-out error by Luke Smock in the top of the first. With the bases loaded,
Garrett Strenger hit a fly ball to left which would've ended the inning but Smock dropped it allowing
LJ Randle,
Mitch Bonczkowski and
Owen Faith to score.
UIndy got back-to-back RBI doubles from Chase Mason and Brayton Bowen in its half of the first to cut the Triton lead to 3-2. Austin Bode tied the game in the second with an RBI double to right center scoring Joey Humphrey.
UMSL retook the lead in the third as Strenger reached on a fielder's choice that brought home Bonczkowski.
The Hounds tied the game again in the fourth on a groundout to second.
In the fifth inning,
Cade Grevengoed reached on an error that allowed Faith to score the go-ahead run.
UIndy tied it again in its half of the fifth as Carter Thomas walked with the bases loaded to force in a run.
The Tritons scored twice in the seventh to retake the lead.
Justin Terhaar scored on a wild pitch and Faith scored on a sacrifice fly to center off the bat of Strenger.
The Hounds got a two-out two-run triple in the bottom of the eighth to tie the game 7-7. They had a chance to win the game in the home half of the ninth. Bowen led off the inning with a single but
Dustin Hagens came out of the bullpen and got to two groundouts and a strikeout to force extra innings.
UMSL scored three runs on two hits and two walks in the 10th. Randle put the Tritons back on top with a single to right scoring
Ethan Landis and then Terhaar hit a two-run single to left plating Randle and
Justin Simard.
Hagens set UIndy down in order in the bottom of the frame with a pop out and two strikeouts to pick up his second win of the weekend and improve to 3-1 on the season. He struck out three batters in his outing and didn't allow a hit.
The Tritons had nine hits in the contest and were led by Randle with three while Simard added two more.
UMSL returns to the diamond on Wednesday (April 22) for a nonconference game at Division I Lindenwood at 5 p.m. at the Lou Brock Sports Complex.
