Tritons Begin Final Road Trip With Sweep of Peacocks

ST. LOUIS – The University of Missouri-St. Louis softball team swept Upper Iowa in their Saturday double header by the scores of 12-3 and 7-1 respectively at the Escheid Softball Complex in Fayette, Iowa. The wins improve the Tritons record to 23-21, 16-6 GLVC while the Peacocks are 6-38, 1-19 GLVC.

Game 1: UMSL 12 Upper Iowa 3, six innings
UMSL opened the scoring in the first inning. May Pasqualini led off with a walk before Kaytie Kossina hit a double to right field to bring Pasqualini home.

Upper Iowa answered in the bottom of the first. Two straight singles saw the first two runners on before both stole a base. A third single brought home the runner from third before a single up the middle brought home a second run. The Peacocks final run of the inning came from a sacrifice fly to left field.

Jamie Widule hit a grand slam home run to left field to give the Tritons four runs in the second. A Kossina single followed by a Kiley Sullivan double to left field scored Kossina, making it 6-3 UMSL after an inning and a half.

The Tritons added another run in the fourth inning when Pasqualini reached on an error and then stole second base. Sullivan singled down the right field line to score Pasqualini from third.

Pasqualini was involved in the Tritons lone run in the fifth as well, hitting an RBI single to right field that scored Gracie Philpot who had reached on a single of her own.

It was a four run sixth inning for UMSL starting with a double to left field from Phoebe Miller that scored Kossina from second base. Madison Rozanski hit a single to left field to score Sullivan after Kenzie Stoltz was hit by a pitch. On the next batter, Philpot hit a single to second base to score Miller. The final run came from Maddie Illingworth reaching on a fielding error, allowing Stoltz to score.

Ashley Borowitz picked up the win, pitching five innings in relief with no runs on two hits to improve to 7-7. Ashley Borowitz came on in relief and pitched five innings, giving up no runs on two hits.

The Tritons had 15 hits in the opener and were led by Sullivan with three while Kossina, Miller, Stoltz, Rozanski and Philpot had two each.

Game 2: UMSL 7 Upper Iowa 1
Once again, the Tritons scored early when Miller hit a single to left field to score Widule in the first.

UMSL added a run in the fifth after back-to-back singles put runners at first and second. Kossina doubled down the right field line to score Illingworth to double the Triton lead.

The Peacocks cut that lead in half in the bottom of the sixth scoring a run thanks to a sacrifice fly to right field to bring the runner from third in.

UMSL scored five in the top of the seventh, starting with a Kossina single to left field to bring Illingworth home after she had doubled to right center. Sullivan then hit a sacrifice fly to left field, scoring Pasqualini from third. Miller added a single of her own to bring home a run before Stoltz doubled to left center to bring home Kossina. The final run of the inning was Rozanski hitting a sacrifice fly to center field to bring Miller home.

Stoltz pitched seven innings in the win, giving up one run on four hits with two strikeouts to improve to 4-4 on the season.

The Tritons had 14 hits in the second contest and were led by Kossina with three while Miller, Widule, Pasqualini and Illingworth contributed two each

UMSL travels to Quincy on Sunday for its final road contests of the regular season starting at noon at the Mart Heinen Softball Complex in Quincy, Ill.
