QUINCY, Ill. – The University of Missouri-St. Louis softball split its doubleheader against Quincy at the Mart Heinen Softball Complex in Quincy, Ill., on Sunday afternoon. The Tritons won the opener 5-4 but lost the second one 8-7.
UMSL is 24-22, 17-7 GLVC while the Hawks are 8-40, 4-20 GLVC.
Game 1: UMSL 5 Quincy 4
The Tritons jumped out to the early lead with a pair of runs in the top of the first.
Kaytie Kossina drove in the first run with a sacrifice fly to left scoring
May Pasqualini. Later in the inning,
Kenzie Stoltz hit a double to left scoring
Jamie Widule.
Quincy got an RBI double from Hailee Irby in the home half of the first to cut UMSL's lead in half. Irby tied the game in the third with a single back up the middle and gave the Hawks the lead with a solo home run in the fifth.
The Tritons tied the game in the sixth on a sacrifice fly from
Madison Rozanski that scored
Kiley Sullivan.
Maddie Illingworth put UMSL in front with a solo home run to left in the seventh inning and then
Phoebe Miller brought home Widule with a groundout to short with an insurance run.
Quincy got a run back in the seventh on a sacrifice fly from Samantha Farrell.
Ashley Borowitz retired Lindsey Fischer on a line out to right to end the game.
The Tritons had five hits in the contest and were led by Stoltz with two while Pasqualini, Sullivan and Illingworth had one hit apiece. Borowitz picked up the win throwing 4.2 innings allowing two runs on two hits with three strikeouts to improve to 8-7 on the season.
Game 2: Quincy 8 UMSL 7
The Hawks jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first of the second game. Irby drove in the first run with a groundout to second and Kenzie Moss hit a two-run home run to right.
UMSL tied the game in the second. Sullivan scored on a throwing error by Farrell and later in the inning Illingworth hit a two-run triple to right scoring Sullivan and
Gracie Philpot. Illingworth tried to score on an inside-the-park home run but was thrown out at the plate.
Quincy retook the lead in the fourth on an RBI single from Farrell.
The Tritons took the lead in the fifth on a grand slam from Sullivan scoring Kossina, Widule and Pasqualini.
The Hawks drew within 7-5 in the sixth with an RBI single from Hailegh Winter and then scored three times in the seventh to win on a walk-off single just inside the right field line. Casey Fronheiser had an RBI double in the seventh while Kaidence Dumas and Kinsey Biggerstaff each had RBI singles.
UMSL had 10 hits in the contest and was led by Widule, Sullivan, Stoltz and Philpot with two each. Stoltz took the loss surrendering eight runs, seven earned, on one hit and nine strikeouts to fall to 4-5 on the season.
The Tritons are back at home on Saturday (May 2) hosting Truman State in a doubleheader starting at noon at the UMSL Softball Field.
