ST. LOUIS – The University of Missouri-St. Louis baseball team split its doubleheader against Maryville at Weber Field on Friday afternoon winning game one 4-0 but lost the second game 17-0. The Tritons are 29-20, 23-8 GLVC while the Saints are 26-22, 20-11 GLVC.
With Drury's 3-2 loss to Southwest Baptist in the second game of its doubleheader and Missouri S&T's sweep at Lincoln on Friday. UMSL clinched the second seed in next week's Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament at Mtn Dew Park in Marion, Ill.
Game 1: UMSL 4 Maryville 0
The Tritons jumped out to an early lead in the top of the first on a two-run single from
Mitch Bonczkowski that scored
LJ Randle and
Justin Terhaar.
Maryville had a chance to get on the board in the home half of the second loading the bases with two out but
Garrett Brunstetter got a ground out to third to end the inning.
Justin Simard hit an RBI single to center in the fourth inning that scored
Cade Grevengoed and then Simard hit an opposite field home run in the sixth giving UMSL a four-run cushion.
Brunstetter pitched five scoreless innings giving up a walk and two hits while striking out four to improve to 5-0 on the season.
Dustin Hagens worked a scoreless sixth and seventh inning to preserve the shutout.
The Tritons had 10 hits in the opener and was led by Terhaar with three while Simard added two more.
Game 2: Maryville 17 UMSL 0
The second contest was all Saints as they scored in every inning in the contest. Matthew Rauser led off the game with a double to left center, went to third on a ground out and scored on a wild pitch.
Maryville got a three-run home run from Justin Gorski in the second then got RBI singles from Steven Schneider and Aaris Stolte in the third.
The Saints added three more in the third on a sac fly from Dominic Anselmo, an RBI single from Schneider and an RBI double off the bat of Tim Leark. Maryville's run came in the fifth on an RBI single from Jack Meyer. The Saints tacked on seven more in the sixth.
Brayden Rubel held UMSL's lineup in check giving up no runs on four hits with four strikeouts in six innings pitched.
Bryce Nicolay took the loss surrendering four runs on six hits with two strikeouts in 1.2 innings pitched to fall to 5-6 on the season.
Terhaar and Simard had two hits apiece while
Brady Robertson added a pinch hit single for the Tritons.
The two teams wrap up their four-game series with a single game on Saturday starting at noon at Weber Field.
