ST. LOUIS – University of Missouri-St. Louis Executive Director of Athletics
Dr. Holly Sheilley announced on Wednesday (July 15) that Zach Ullrich has been hired as head coach of the Triton baseball program. Ullrich becomes the seventh head coach in program history.
"We are incredibly excited to welcome Zach Ullrich to lead our baseball program at UMSL," Sheilley said. "Our baseball program has established itself as one of the premier programs in NCAA Division II, and we were committed to finding a leader who could build upon that winning tradition rather than simply maintain it. Zach has consistently demonstrated that he knows how to elevate programs, develop championship-caliber student-athletes, and create cultures built on accountability, excellence, and relentless improvement.
"His track record includes leading Roanoke College to a 103-63 record in four seasons, producing conference Players and Pitchers of the Year, guiding Christian Brothers to its highest conference finish in years, and rebuilding rosters while achieving historic milestones. Just as importantly, he shares our vision of pursuing championships while developing outstanding young men who succeed in the classroom, on the field, and in the community. I am confident Zach will continue the incredible momentum our baseball program has established and position the Tritons to compete for GLVC championships and deep NCAA Tournament runs for years to come," Sheilley said.
"I want to thank Dr. Sheilley for giving me the opportunity to lead this program," Ullrich said. "I can't wait to get to work with our student-athletes, alumni, and supporters as we build something that everyone associated with UMSL can be proud of. The future is bright, and I'm excited to get started."
Ullrich spent the past two seasons as the head coach at Christian Brothers University in Memphis, Tenn. In his first season he led the Buccaneers to a record of 17-29, which was the most for the team since 2006. This past season he led the Bucs to their highest finish in the Gulf South Conference. The team's earned run average (ERA) also dropped by two runs in his two years at the helm.
Prior to his time in Memphis, Ullrich was the head coach at Roanoke College (Virginia) for four seasons. He guided the Maroons to a 57-26 record in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play. In his final season he led the Maroons to a second place finish in conference before losing in the ODAC Tournament championship game to the defending national champion University of Lynchburg Hornets.
Before returning to Roanoke, Ullrich spent two years as the top assistant at Barton serving as the pitching and head developmental coach. In the 2018-19 season, Ullrich led the Bulldog pitchers to their most strikeouts (421) in school history while the team ERA dropped from 7.35 to 5.54. That season saw Barton's win total go from 12 to 31, the most in Division II that season. In addition, the opponents' batting average fell from .319 to .287 while five players earned Conference Carolinas Pitcher-of-the-Week honors. Colby Shimmel was named a national pitcher of the week after throwing a no-hitter and Dylan Ward broke the school's career strikeout mark under Ullrich's tutelage.
Prior to his first stint at Roanoke, Ullrich spent five years as an assistant at Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pa. In his first two seasons at Dickinson, Ullrich served as the pitching coach where he assisted in daily practices, player evaluation, community involvement and in-game management of the pitching staff. Ullrich was also named the Recruiting Coordinator for the Red Devils in 2013, where he was the point of contact for prospective student athletes. He also helped with player analysis and development both in the classroom and on the field. Under his leadership, the Dickinson pitching staff was ranked nationally in ERA, strikeouts per game, and WHIP in 2013 while breaking multiple school records. He coached two All-Region and five All-Centennial Conference selections.
Ullrich graduated from Mansfield University in 2011 with a degree in history and a minor in psychology. He pitched at Mansfield from 2006-2010, highlighted by an NCAA Tournament Appearance in 2010. As a student-athlete at Mansfield, Ullrich worked sporting events for football, field hockey, basketball, soccer and swimming. He also coached summer camps and rebuilt baseball fields in the Mansfield, Pa. community. In May of 2019, Ullrich received his master's degree in athletic administration and coaching from Liberty University.
Ullrich and his wife Meghan have a daughter, Josephine.
