PITTSBURG, Kan.—The ninth ranked University of Missouri-St. Louis women's soccer team dropped its season opener against Pittsburg State 5-0 at the Gorilla Soccer Pitch in Pittsburg, Kan., on Thursday morning. The Tritons are 0-1 while the Gorillas are 1-0.
UMSL fell behind early, conceding in the second minute. Pitt St's Ryann Caruth got on the end of an Abby Hoffman pass and finished to the top left. Sammie Edwards was also credited with an assist for finding Hoffman and starting the play.
The Gorillas added a second goal in the 28
th minute. Rose Harden found Shayla Hunt off a corner kick and Hunt finished by sending the ball into the lower left corner.
Kaiao Zoller added a third goal with four minutes left in the half thanks to an assist from Mia Hunt. Zoller scored with a shot high and to the right.
PSU added two more in the second half. Edwards scored high center in the 57
th minute with Caruth and Avianna Gonzalez assisting. Carrie Cunningham scored the fifth goal unassisted in the 74
th minute.
The Tritons had four shots, with one on goal in the contest from
Ashtyn Fry.
Hannah McFarlane made nine saves in the contest.
UMSL continues its road trip this Saturday (August 29) traveling to Topeka, Kan., for a match against fourth ranked Washburn at 1 p.m.
