Romeoville, Ill. – The University of Missouri-St. Louis men's soccer team got a first half goal from
Brady Freeman and a career-high six saves from
Will Winkler to defeat Lewis 1-0 on Wednesday afternoon at Lewis Stadium in Romeoville, Ill. The Tritons improve to 3-3-1, 2-2-1 GLVC while the Flyers are 2-5-1, 1-4-1 GLVC.
The win snapped UMSL's two-game losing streak this season and a three-game skid against Lewis.
The Tritons goal came in the 15th minute. After a throw in on the near side,
Gibson Hunt slid a pass back to
Nico Wingren. Wingren played the ball on the ground to
Mario Garcia and Garcia tapped it to Freeman running bye. Freeman dribbled inside the top of the box and beat the keeper to the lower right corner for his team leading fourth goal of the season.
UMSL finished the first half with a 5-4 edge in shots with each side putting two on frame and each side recorded a corner kick.
The Tritons had several opportunities early in the second half to extend its lead but its only shot on goal game from Garcia in the 59th minute.
The Flyers pushed hard for the equalizer in the final five minutes but Winkler stood tall making three saves to record his first career collegiate shutout.
Lewis outshot UMSL 13-11 in the contest including 6-3 in shots on goal and held a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks.
The Tritons return home on Saturday (Sept. 26) hosting Illinois Springfield to start a three-game home stand at 7:30 p.m. at Don Dallas Field.
