St. Louis—The University of Missouri-St. Louis men's soccer team dropped a tense match 3-2 against the University of Illinois Springfield on Saturday evening at Don Dallas Field. The Tritons fall to 3-4-1, 2-3-1 GLVC while the Prairie Stars are 1-7-1, 1-4-1 GLVC.
Brady Freeman started the scoring in the 10
th minute.
Mario Garcia found space on the wing and fed a pass to
Max Matarelli, who drove inside before skipping a pass through the box to Freeman. Running on to the ball, Freeman snuck the ball past the keeper to make it 1-0.
UIS answered in the 20
th minute with a penalty kick goal. Robin Lemke Bergseth converted from the spot, going straight down the middle on the whistle as Winkler dove to even the score.
The Prairie Stars added a second goal in the 38
th minute when Adam Knaze found Donovan Faletto who fed Josh Mensching a cross. Mensching finished near post to make it 2-1 in favor of UIS.
Less than a minute later the Prairie Stars added a third goal when Lemke Bergseth found space and scuffed the ball past a lunging
Will Winkler to make it 3-1.
UMSL found a goal in the second half, with Garcia scoring in the 68
th minute. The ball ricocheted to Garcia at the top of the 18-yard-box and Garcia volleyed it back into the near post netting to make it 3-2 with twenty minutes to play.
The Tritons outshot UIS 17-9, with four shots on net. Freeman led the Tritons with nine shots, three on net. Garcia had two shots with one on frame in the contest.
UMSL continues its three-match home stand on Wednesday (Sept. 30) against Quincy at 7:30 p.m. at Don Dallas Field.
