ST. LOUIS, MO. – Senior
Devonna Smith recorded a career-high 29 points and added a season-best 15 rebounds to help the University of Missouri-St. Louis women's basketball team to a 78-61 victory over Culver-Stockton on Wednesday afternoon.
UMSL, which shot a season-high 46.2 percent from the floor, snapped a two-game losing streak with the win, improving to 4-3 on the season, while Culver-Stockton slips to 5-8 with the loss.
Smith was one of three Tritons to reach double figures with senior
Angela Johnson and sophomore
Alexis Lawrence adding 16 and 13 points, respectively.
A 9-2 run by the Tritons in the final three minutes of the first half helped spur UMSL to a 42-33 halftime advantage. Smith scored 16 of her points in the first 20 minutes of play, knocking down 8-of-9 from the field and finished 14-of-18 from the floor.
The Tritons extended their lead to 61-43 midway through the second half before a 10-3 run by Culver-Stockton trimmed the advantage to 64-53. However, Smith scored six of UMSL's next 10 points en route to the win.
UMSL outrebounded the Wildcats, 44-31, including a 20-8 edge on the offensive end, and forced its guests into 22 turnovers, resulting in 19 points on the other end.
Junior
Hazaria Washington recorded eight boards, including five on the offensive end, and registered three blocked shots, while Johnson also tallied five offensive rebounds, finishing with seven.
Senior
Deaven Omohundro dished out six assists and collected a pair of steals.
Culver-Stockton, led by Mimi Reaves' 23 points, shot 40.4 percent from the field.
UMSL will close out its non-conference schedule with two games at the Wayne State classic, held in Detroit, Mich., December 28-29. The Tritons play the host school on Friday before facing Northwood on Saturday.
