ST. LOUIS, MO. – Maryville University outscored the University of Missouri-St. Louis men's basketball team, 13-5, in the final six and a half minutes of regulation to force overtime before coming away with a 72-65 victory in the Great Lakes Valley Conference opener for both teams Wednesday night.
The Saints got a game-high 30 points from Asa Toney in the win, including eight in extra period, to improve to 7-1 overall, including 1-0 in the GLVC. UMSL slips to 5-2 and 0-1 in the league.
After senior Isiah Nunn's dunk gave the Tritons a 50-42 lead with 7:02 to play, Darrin Young Jr. scored four straight points to ignite the comeback, while three Saints three-pointers, including one with 2:07 on the clock by Toney that tied the game at 55-55, helped force the overtime.
Senior Charlie Woods drained both free throws to start the extra period, but back-to-back layups by Toney followed, giving the Saints a 59-57 lead with 3:46 to play that they would not relinquish.
Woods finished with 22 points and eight rebounds, while senior Justin Jones added 13 points and five rebounds.
UMSL outscored Maryville 19-9 in the final 8:07 of the first half to hold a 35-30 lead at halftime after Maryville had jumped out to a quick 14-8 lead by hitting six of its first eight field goals.
The Tritons shot 39.3 percent from the floor in the contest and held a 36-32 rebounding edge with sophomore Aareon Smith grabbing 10 boards. Maryville shot 43.6 percent, netting all five field goal attempts in the overtime.
UMSL is idle until Monday, Dec. 17, when the Tritons travel to Lincoln.
TRITON TIDBITS: The win by Maryville was the first-ever over UMSL, who slips to 13-1 all-time against the Saints… UMSL lost its first game at home this season and saw an eight game home win-streak dating back to last season snapped with the loss… UMSL falls to 6-12 in GLVC openers and had a three-game league opener win streak snapped… the Tritons fall to 0-2 this season in overtime games.
