Tritons Hold Off Panthers to Get Back in Win Column

ST. LOUIS, MO. – Freshman Jessica Ploss recorded a career-high 12 kills to help the University of Missouri-St. Louis volleyball team snap a four-match losing streak with a 3-1 victory over Drury on Saturday afternoon in Great Lakes Valley Conference action.

The Tritons won by set scores of 25-20, 25-19, 26-28, 27-25 to improve to 5-11 overall and 4-3 in the GLVC. Drury slips to 8-9 and 3-4 in the league.

Ploss hit at a .786 clip, committing just one error in 14 attempts, while adding four blocks as UMSL out-blocked the Panthers, 12.5-8. Senior Corinne Hoekstra tallied five blocks and added 10 kills, while junior Chelsea Burkle finished with 11 kills, 15 digs, four blocks and three service aces.

Junior Anna McNulty helped direct the offense to a .171 attack percentage by dishing out 27 assists and also recorded 15 digs. Seniors Jennie Manis and Liz Jaeger added 18 and 15 digs, respectively.

After four straight Drury points in the first set gave the Panthers a 17-15 lead, the Tritons closed out the frame with a 10-3 run, including scoring the final three points.

UMSL then held Drury to just .073 hitting in the second frame to go up two sets to one.

In the third set, the Tritons rallied from a 22-15 deficit to knot the game at 23-23 on a Ploss kill and fended off three Panthers set points before Drury scored the final two points.

UMSL fought off another pair of Drury set points in the fourth frame and scored three straight points, including two on Panther attack errors, to garner the match win.

Drury, which hit .121, was led by Alex Smith's match-high 16 kills and 21 digs.

The Tritons return to action next Saturday, traveling to Bellarmine.
