Late Rally Comes Up Short For Men's Hoops in 79-71 Loss at William Jewell

LIBERTY, MO. – The University of Missouri-St. Louis men's basketball team rallied from a 15-point deficit, but couldn't complete the comeback as the Tritons lost a 79-71 verdict at William Jewell College Saturday afternoon in Great Lakes Valley Conference action.
 
The Cardinals scored 10 straight to ignite a 15-4 run, taking their largest lead of the game at 59-44 with 7:05 to play before UMSL answered with a 19-7 run over the next five minutes that trimmed the deficit to 65-63. However, UMSL would get no closer and William Jewell sealed the victory by going 9-of-10 at the free throw line in the final 37 seconds.
 
UMSL saw a three-game win streak snapped in the loss as the Tritons slip to 10-5 overall, including 3-4 in the GLVC. William Jewell evens it record at 7-7 overall and 3-3 in the league.
 
Junior Michael Weber led three Tritons in double figures with 19 points, shooting 5-of-10 from three-point range. Junior Darian Cartharn and senior Joshua McCoy added 15 and 13 points, respectively.
 
A three-pointer at the buzzer by Craig Mattson sent William Jewell into halftime with a 37-33 lead. The basket also ended a 6-0 run by UMSL that allowed the Tritons back to within one at 35-34 after trailing 34-27.
 
The Cardinals also held a seven point lead at 25-18 before UMSL drained three three-pointers on consecutive possessions, including two from Cartharn, which tied the game at 27-27 with 4:36 on the clock.
 
The Tritons shot 42.9 percent from the field, but were 29.7 percent (11-of-37) from three-point range, while William Jewell shot 38.9 percent and outrebounded UMSL, 36-33.
 
Senior Charlie Woods pulled down 10 rebounds and recorded four blocked shots.
 
UMSL returns to the court on Thursday, hosting Missouri S&T at 7:30 p.m., in the start of a three-game homestand.
