ST. LOUIS, MO. – The University of Missouri-St. Louis volleyball team rallied back from a 2-0 deficit, but saw its comeback fall short in a 3-2 loss to No. 23 ranked Truman State on Saturday afternoon in the regular season finale for both teams.
The visiting Bulldogs scored five straight to earn a 25-23 set one victory and took the second set 25-21, before the Tritons rallied back with wins of 25-23 and 25-14 in the third and fourth sets. Truman State then held UMSL to just two kills and forced eight Triton attack errors in a 15-4 decisive set five win.
UMSL falls to 17-14 with the loss and ends Great Lakes Valley Conference play with a 10-8 mark. The Tritons will begin GLVC Tournament play next Friday with a quarterfinal round match. Opponent and location will be determined later tonight after the completion of the other league matches.
Truman State, which improves to 21-10 overall and 14-4 in the league, used 17 blocks to help garner the win, including four in the fifth set, and held UMSL to a .131 attack percentage. The Bulldogs were only slightly better offensively at .146.
Freshman
Jory Siebenmorgen recorded a career-high 13 kills and hit .219 to lead the Tritons, while senior
Chelsea Burkle also tallied 13 kills and added 18 digs and three blocks. Junior
Allie Ewing also recorded a career-best with 10 kills, while sophomore
Jessica Ploss finished with 11 kills and eight blocks. Ploss recorded seven kills and four blocks in the sets three and four victories and accounted for both UMSL kills in the fifth set.
Senior
Anna McNulty dished out 30 assists, while sophomore
Lindsay Meyer added 25 assists and tied a season-high 20 digs, also set against Truman State earlier this season.
Junior
Emily Bragaw tallied a team-best 24 digs, while junior
Haley Brightwell recorded a career-high 22 digs. UMSL registered a season-best 96 digs as a team.
