Volleyball Picks Up Road Win With Sweep of Bellarmine

LOUISVILLE, KY. – The University of Missouri-St. Louis volleyball team picked up a key Great Lakes Valley Conference victory on Saturday, defeating Bellarmine 25-21, 25-19, 25-18.
 
The Tritons, who entered the match tied for seventh place in the league standings with the Knights, improve to 15-12 overall with the win, including 8-6 in the GLVC. Bellarmine falls to 13-11 overall and 7-7 in the league.
 
Junior Allie Ewing tied a career-high with eight kills, hitting .471, while senior Chelsea Burkle recorded a team-best nine kills to go with seven digs and six blocks.
 
Sophomore Lindsay Meyer tallied 18 assists and 11 digs, while helping the Tritons to a .309 attack percentage.
 
UMSL raced out to an 8-2 lead to open the match with sophomore Hannah Miller serving seven straight points. The Tritons later took a 13-4 lead  on a Knights bad set and posted a 21-11 advantage on back-to-back kills from junior Haley Brightwell and Ewing. However, six unanswered Bellarmine points, including three courtesy of UMSL attack errors, ignited a 9-2 Knights run that trimmed the deficit to 23-20. A block from senior Chelsea Burkle and sophomore Jessica Ploss then gave the Tritons set point. The Knights followed with a kill to extend the set before a service error gave UMSL the win.
 
The Tritons took another early lead in the second set, using three straight kills to take a 9-4 lead. Bellarmine followed with an 8-2 run to go up 12-11. Following a Knight's kill that gave them a 15-14 advantage, UMSL would score four straight for an 18-15 lead they would not relinquish. The Tritons hit .500 in that second frame behind 15 kills.
 
In the third set, UMSL used a 12-2 run to turn a 6-5 lead into 18-7 advantage. After a Jory Siebenmorgen kills made it 21-10, the Knights reeled off five straight to pull within 21-15, but would get no closer. Burkle had five of her kills in the third set.
 
The Tritons recorded 10 blocks to Bellarmine's two. Ploss added six blocks, while junior Emily Bragaw tallied 10 digs.
 
UMSL is back on the court tomorrow in a 1 p.m. game at GLVC East Division co-leader Southern Indiana.
