Men's Basketball Stopped by William Jewell, 80-75

ST. LOUIS, MO. – Visiting William Jewell shot 52 percent from the field and got a game-high 29 points from Dillion Deck en route to an 80-75 victory over the University of Missouri-St. Louis men's basketball team Thursday night in Great Lakes Valley Conference action.
 
The Tritons slip to 14-8 overall with the loss, including 7-7 in the GLVC, while the Cardinals even their ledger at 11-11 overall and 7-7 in the league, moving into a tie for third place in the West Division standings with UMSL.
 
William Jewell used a 14-2 run midway through the second half to erase a seven-point UMSL lead and later hit a three-pointer with 5:27 to play, taking a 69-67 lead they would not relinquish.
 
The Tritons, which trailed 38-36 at the half, began the second half on a 14-5 run, and took their largest lead of the game at 50-43 on a three-pointer by senior Joshua McCoy. McCoy, who finished with a team-best 23 points, scored eight of his points during that stretch. UMSL would then miss eight of its next nine shots, allowing the Cardinals to retake the lead.
 
McCoy's fourth three-pointer of the game with 1:03 to play pulled UMSL within 76-75, but the Tritons would get no closer.
 
Junior Darian Cartharn added 13 points and finished with five rebounds, three steals and two assists, while sophomore Aareon Smith followed with 12 points, six rebounds and three assists.
 
The Tritons shot 40.9 percent and were out-rebounded, 37-29.
 
William Jewell jumped out to an early 15-6 lead before taking its largest lead at 27-17 with 6:41 remaining in the first half. UMSL then went on a 14-4 run and tied it at 31-31 on a jumper in the paint by senior Justin Jones at the two minute mark.
 
UMSL returns to the court on Saturday, hosting Rockhurst at 3:15 p.m.
