Men’s Basketball Drops Regular Season Finale at Maryville, 74-65

ST. LOUIS, MO. – Maryville shot 53.2 percent, including 68.4 percent in the second half, en route to a 74-65 victory over the visiting University of Missouri-St. Louis men's basketball team Thursday night in Great Lakes Valley Conference action.
 
UMSL ends the regular season at 17-9 overall and finishes with a 10-8 league mark. The Tritons will be the No. 9 seed in the 2013 GLVC Tournament and begin play on Sunday with a first round game at No. 8 seed Indianapolis at 5:15 pm (EST). Maryville moves to 23-8 and 12-6 in the league with the win.
 
The Tritons, which shot just 30.8 percent in the final 20 minutes, were led by senior Joshua McCoy and junior Darian Cartharn, who scored 19 and 13 points, respectively. UMSL finished the contest connecting at a 34 percent clip from the floor.
 
Maryville scored seven straight to ignite a 10-2 run, taking its largest lead at 27-20 at the 5:38 mark. The Tritons followed with a 7-2 run and pulled within 29-27 on the first of two free throw makes by Cartharn before the Saints took a 36-31 lead into halftime.
 
McCoy pulled UMSL within 41-40 with a three-point bucket four minutes into the second half, but Maryville outscored the Tritons, 10-4, over the next four and a half minutes to post a 51-44 lead. The Saints later took their largest lead of the game at 65-52 with just over five minutes to play.
 
UMSL whittled the deficit down to 65-57 at the three minute mark, but would get no closer.
 
The Saints owned a 32-30 rebounding advantage with UMSL holding a 13-8 edge on the offensive end. The Tritons outscored Maryville, 22-7, in second chance points, but were outscored 20-13 in points off turnovers. Both teams committed 12 turnovers.
