Baseball Flies Past Hawks in Sweep of Rockhurst

ST. LOUIS, MO. – Senior John Pilackas and junior Michael Budka combined for 10 hits and six RBIs as the University of Missouri-St. Louis baseball team picked up 3-2 and 13-2 victories at Rockhurst University on Saturday in Great Lakes Valley Conference action.
 
Both players finished 5-of-9 at the plate with three RBIs.
 
The Tritons move to 19-15 overall, including 15-9 in the GLVC, while Rockhurst slips to 16-18 and 11-15 in the league.
 
The two teams close out the series with a 12 p.m. doubleheader tomorrow.
 
GAME 1 – UMSL 3, Rockhurst 2 (9 inning game)
UMSL rallied for the game-one victory with three unanswered runs to erase a 2-0 Rockhurst lead.
 
The Hawks scored twice in the sixth inning before UMSL knotted the score in the seventh. Senior John Pilackas delivered a one-out bases loaded RBI single to bring junior Paul Richmond across the plate for the first run, while junior Justin Lois reached on a fielder's choice, which allowed junior Michael Budka to score for the other run.
 
Pilackas, who finished 2-for-4 at the plate, then drove in the game-winning run in the ninth, with another RBI single that scored Budka.
 
UMSL recorded nine hits to Rockhurst's 10 and also got a two-hit performance from Budka and sophomore Joe Wieczkowski.
 
Senior Kyle Renaud collected the win in two innings of relief work without allowing a hit.
 
GAME 2 – UMSL 13, Rockhurst 2 (7 inning game)
UMSL rattled off 15 hits en route to scoring 13 runs and received three hits each from Pilackas and Budka.
 
A sacrifice fly from senior Charlie Mohr in the first inning, followed by a four-run second inning gave UMSL a quick 5-0 lead. Pilackas had an RBI double in that frame, while senior Lucas Matecki recorded an RBI single.
 
A Richmond RBI single, followed by a three-run Budka triple in the fourth inning pushed the advantage to 9-0.
 
Richmond added another RBI single in the fifth inning, while a three-run, four-hit sixth inning, including RBI singles from Matecki and senior Trevor Nathanson made it 13-0.
 
Junior Nolan Clayton tossed the six-inning victory, allowing both Rockhurst runs in the bottom of the sixth. He allowed just four hits, while striking out four.
 
Matecki finished with two hits, two RBIs and three runs scored, while junior Tyler Bunge was 2-for-3 at the plate with two runs scored.
